When I Download A Design My Computer Tells Me That The File Is "Corrupt". What gives?
It's most likely that your computer is being "protected" by a buggy program...
Are you now using either "McAfee Internet Security" or "Norton Internet Security", or some other "All-In-One-Internet-Security-Program"?
If so, then the problem is that their firewall program corrupts some zip files as you download them. This has just started happening in the summer of 2007 and I suspect that these companies have changed their firewall programs in a way that is now messing up downloads of zip files.
You can cofirm the changes that their program makes to downloaded files by downloading one of our original files. For example -- this file
(ttp://www.artisticthreadworks.com/members/programs/fileinfo.cfm?ID=14&action=Display)
... says (File Size) 49,492 bytes on the left side menu. When I download the file it in fact gives me a zip file that IS 49,492 bytes. (48.3k) Here's a picture of the "Properties" window after I downloaded the file...
If you download that same file using the "DOWNLOAD NOW" link and get a file size that is LESS than 48.3k then you'll know that your "protection" software is stripping off part of the zip file.
The best solution to the problem is to get different anti-virus software that is SEPARATE from your firewall software instead of all-in-one.
I recommend the program from "WebRoot" that is both antivirus and antispyware combined. It did a good job of protection and is reasonably priced and didn't interfere with other programs or files as much as the "internet security suite" type of programs do.
Do NOT get the version with a FIREWALL program included or it's possible you'll have the same problem. Get JUST anti-virus and anti-spyware software without the "firewall" software.
Using the free firewall program included with Windows...
You WILL want to have a firewall program on your computer but Microsoft includes an excellent firewall program with Windows for FREE. Most people don't realize that, so they buy another program to do firewall work for them. Just turn on the firewall included with Windows and keep your money.
Here's how to use the free firewall program included with Windows... Go to
Click on "Start"
Click on "All Programs"
Click on "Accessories"
Click on "System Tools"
Click on "Security Center"
And turn on your Firewall protection. To do that, follow these steps...
When you open the Windows security center, you will see something like this...
I shrunk this a bit to fit on this page! Notice the 1st one in the center says "Firewall" and there is a green button next to it that says "On". It looks like this...
If yours doesn't say on - you'll want to turn it on. to do that, click the link that says "Windows Firewall" below the Virus Protection indicator. It looks like this...
When you click it, a new window will open up that looks like this one...
Click the button next to the green shield that says "ON (Recommended)" then click the OK button at the bottom of that window.
If you have another firewall program (like in your "Internet Protection Suite" then you'll need to now turn that firewall off and let the one in Windows handle that job for you. The one built into Windows won't block your zip file downloads.
