AEC, NOAA, and Biz Survey...
Saturday, Apr 24, 2010
Holly's been at the American Embroidery Conference or "AEC" in Marietta this week. It started on Wednesday evening and ends Sunday morning. Holly's been staying in the hotel and I'm camping out with our girls. It's not a pet-friendly hotel so I leave the girls in the camper for a little while and have most meals with Holly and friends but stay with the girls the rest of the time.
Weather Radio...
As I type this there are severe thunderstorms rolling through the area. Heavy rain, lightning, and wind gusts to 35 mph. I have the NOAA weather-radio on just in case they announce a tornado watch or warning. That's when I bug out from the camper to a more sturdy building. :-)
Tornado's and other severe weather conditions happen mostly in the spring but CAN happen any time of the year. If you don't have a NOAA Weather Alert radio yet, please get one. It could save your life and those you love. They're cheap enough and readily available. I've THINK I have even seen them at Wal-Mart lately for about $30 and in most parts of the country you can't go 10 miles without passing a Wal-Mart. That said, I checked their website and didn't see them listed just now so I went to the Radio Shack site and found the one we have in case you want the same type.
(Note: That's not an affiliate link. I don't make money off you buying a NOAA radio from Radio Shack. And I don't own stock in Midland. I'm just concerned that with tornado season coming on strong I'd like as many of you as possible to be safe.) Once you plug in your NOAA alert radio and select the channel that comes in strongest for you, you're all set. It goes into silent mode until a storm comes up that affects your area. Then it turns un-mutes the volume and you know immediately that you need to listen and possibly act.
Living in a camper most of the time means we are as susceptible to bad storms as people living in mobile homes. It's just not a safe place to be in bad weather, so we have one with us and turned on all the time just in case.
Do you have one? How about your family... do they have one?
This came up last night in our gab-fest... The topic of the economy and owning a business came up and we wondered how many folks own a business or are thinking of starting one. I heard a couple pundits discussing how a slow economy is often the impetus for more people to start their own businesses either because their job has been eliminated or because they fear it might be eliminated. So I made this simple 1-Question survey just to see how our readers would answer. Just click the picture below and you will be taken to the survey page...

"Finally Finished My Quilt Top"
by BStripe
"Made out of jelly rolls. I can't remember the name of the pattern and I misplaced it."

Thank you BStripe for posting this great picture in our photo gallery!
Note: When posting pictures showing an embroidery design in our photo gallery, please give credit to the digitizer as other members will want to know where to get those designs too!
Each photo posted in our photo gallery enters you into our weekly photo contest where we give away a 3 month membership to ATW. It's a random drawing so your photo doesn't have to show some wonderful one-of-a-kind project in order to be the winner.
Just do something, take a picture, and post it to our photo gallery!

(Note to members... when you post a photo in the gallery, it is automatically entered into the contest for that week's prize drawing. But, if the photo includes an embroidery design you must say what website or digitizer the design came from like mjaybee did with this photo, in order for it to win the prize for the week. If the design came from another digitizer, that's okay, you can still win with the photo, but we have to be able to credit the other digitizer's work or I can't post the photo here in our newsletter so I can't let that photo win. Okay? Cool. You guys rock! -- Larry)
Word-Blocks
December 2009
Here is the member bonus design set free to members during December 2009... Word-Block designs are made to be used in any of 3 different ways...
The first way is with the full design filling in all the blocks. In the "Snowman" design shown below on a sweatshirt, the letters spelling out SNOWMAN fill in the alternating blocks and the remaining blocks are filled with designs that coordinate with the word snowman.
The second way to use the design is with the complete design augmented by buttons or other notions added around the word-blocks. This is shown below with the addition of objects to the AUTUMN design...
The third way to use the designs is to stitch them out without the fill-in designs included as shown here...
The empty blocks are then filled with your own ornamentation as shown here...
Holly's first set of word-block designs will be released as a member bonus for ATW members on 12/1/2009. She has other sets planned that use the same concept. These designs would work well on sweatshirts and garments but also would look great on seasonal pillows too.
ATW Members during December 2009 can download this set of designs for free here...
You can buy this set now for with instant download...
Unless otherwise noted above, designs fit in a 4x4 hoop and formats included are ART, DST, HUS, JEF, PCS, PES, and SEW.
