Flying, Fan Page, and Finding More
Saturday, Apr 10, 2010
Holly went flying yesterday. Unfortunately, no airplane was involved in this trip. Yesterday morning she was walking through the parking lot at one of her favorite sewing stores near Fort Walton Beach and she tripped over the concrete car parking stop.
You know, the things that look like this...

She instinctively tucked her right arm in close to her body to protect it from damage as that arm has had surgery and the elbow is fragile. She protected her arm, but landed on the side of her face onto the asphalt.
We went to the local E.R. and they did a CAT scan to check for possible broken occipital bone, but fortunately no breaks. Unfortunately, her face will have some bad bruising for several weeks.
While we were in the waiting area Holly asked me to get something from the car which I did. When I got back, she was working with the admitting clerk answering questions and filling out forms. I came over and took over for her but noticed that the woman was giving me the fish-eye the whole time.
After we left the hospital a couple hours later, Holly told me about the conversation she had with the clerk before I got back from the car...
Clerk: What happened to you? Holly: I tripped. Clerk: Tripped... or pushed? Holly: Tripped! Clerk: Are you sure? Holly: Yes I'm sure!
What a sad statement about the world we live in.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- Newsletter & Website Updates Continued From Last Week ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think the newsletter changes will all be in place for our next issue. The improvements are looking very nice. I have a few more technical details to handle but the graphics are done and look terrific.
You should see the new look for the newsletter next week. The changes to the website will take at least 2 weeks more to finish. Nothing to drastic there, just trying to make it wider and less clicks to get to things people access all the time.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- Facebook Users Come Join Our Fan Page... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
ATW now has a Fan Page on Facebook. You can access it here... http://www.facebook.com/artisticthreadworks
There are already almost 300 fans and we haven't really even promoted the thing yet. If you're not on Facebook yet, you should check it out. It started as a way for college kids to connect with each other and has spread to the rest of the world. In March, Facebook moved ahead of Yahoo and Google to become the 1 most popular Website, according to tracking service Hitwise.
While it's easy to ignore a silly little website that is geared towards college kids, it's a bit harder to ignore one that has expanded out to include everyone and is the 1 most popular website on the world wide web.
What's so good about Facebook? It makes staying connected to friends easier than ever before. I have been able to connect up with friends from high school and college and previous jobs that I thought I would never see or hear from again. And it was all done with just a thought and a few clicks.
Catching up with their lives has been rewarding and now staying in touch is automated. I post something on my page and it gets posted on their updates page so they can see what's happening with me. And vice-versa too. I see what's happening with them with just a couple posts. I can browse their photos, send them a note, play silly games if I want to (I don't do that), and generally stay connected.
The down-side to Facebook is that at least for me, some of the how-to-get-there-from-here stuff is a little kludgy. I'm still looking for how to do some stuff that seems to be an obvious thing to do but isn't. I know I can read some books and watch some videos and figure out how to do those things, but really it should be a bit more intuitive in general.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- Finding More On The Web Than You Can Handle... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just when you realize that the world wide web has every bit of information you could possibly want indexed on it, you figure out that the next challenge is keeping it handy inside your own computer!
I am constantly coming across little bits of information that I would like to keep handy for future reference. Maybe I know I will be working on something soon and that info will come in handy. How do you store that info in a handy, easy to read format?
So far I have explored "Notebook by Circus Ponies" (a Mac software package), Google Notebook, Evernote, and several other programs. None of them seem ideal to me yet.
I'm still looking. If you have a favorite, let me know in our forum. I just want to save the info on a web page that I'm viewing without making it into a PDF (time-consuming) and without making a bookmark for it (way too many bookmarks to browse through already).

Skull Dress - Rock On!
by tfwhitehead
"My granddaughter is wild about the rocker type skull stuff. She was having a rocker girl birthday party and wanted something special to wear. I searched and searched for a girly applique skull and finially found one. The skull was from digialbydesign( an etsy shop) The guitar was a freebie from planetapplique.com "

Thank you tfwhitehead for posting this great picture in our photo gallery!
Note: When posting pictures showing an embroidery design in our photo gallery, please give credit to the digitizer as other members will want to know where to get those designs too!
Each photo posted in our photo gallery enters you into our weekly photo contest where we give away a 3 month membership to ATW. It's a random drawing so your photo doesn't have to show some wonderful one-of-a-kind project in order to be the winner.
Just do something, take a picture, and post it to our photo gallery!
Autism Awareness Day Digitized by Tizzylishy
"For 2 special little guys in my life, I wanted to do this for a shirt for today, Autistic Awareness Day. Since the logo is free to use according to the website, I decided to do it and share. Hope some can use it. It will fit in the 4x4 frame and I included PES, HUS, and JEF." Donna (Tizzylishy)

(Note to members... when you post a photo in the gallery, it is automatically entered into the contest for that week's prize drawing. But, if the photo includes an embroidery design you must say what website or digitizer the design came from like mjaybee did with this photo, in order for it to win the prize for the week. If the design came from another digitizer, that's okay, you can still win with the photo, but we have to be able to credit the other digitizer's work or I can't post the photo here in our newsletter so I can't let that photo win. Okay? Cool. You guys rock! -- Larry)
